Board Member Reports
Ms. Thompson attended the Library Board meeting and reported that the Library would like to encourage students and parents to come to the library and learn to enjoy all the resources available there. The library staff is happy to assist patrons and desires to inspire a love of reading.
Ms. Miller stated at a recent Parks and Rec. meeting it was announced that the golf course will reopen with a new name and logo on May 24th. At this meeting, the landscaping plan for Charles Hay Elementary was presented. There is no start date for the Hay project, but a help request was mentioned for the parks department to assist with moving pea-gravel and dirt.
Mr. Gorsky attended a recent City/Schools meeting where the Flood property was the main topic. Cooperation with the City is very good, as they explore what disposition of the Flood property would most benefit the community.
Highlights from Superintendent's Report
Dr. McCabe said the February 5th Board meeting will be moved to Monday, February 4th to allow people to attend their neighborhood political caucus meetings on Tuesday, February 5, 2008. Dr. McCabe also informed the Board that sixth grade at Bishop will be moved to Englewood Middle School next year. The middle school has an excellent range of class offerings and good technical support and is the appropriate educational setting for sixth graders. Also mentioned was the hiring of a bus driver for the late bus run from Englewood Middle School.
Audit Report
Ms. Wendy Swanhorst from Swanhorst and Company, LLC, the District's auditor, stated that the district's financial condition is good. Complimenting job excellence in the Englewood Finance Office, Ms. Swanhorst stated Englewood's finance department does a superior job and she is not able to say that very often about finance departments. Strong concern about the impact of early retirement cost was expressed in the audit. The Board informed Ms. Swanhorst that issue is being addressed. Another concern was the need to train another payroll person and Ms. LaPlante reported that was also being addressed.
Quarterly Financial Reports
Ms. Peg LaPlante provided the quarterly financial report for the quarter ending December 31, 2007. Fund balances were reviewed along with comparisons to the previous year's spending, that show spending comparable to last year. Both revenue and expenditures are on target. Ms. LaPlante also noted that the food service department is doing well this year.
English Language Learner (ELL) Update
Ms. Gail Neubert presented information on the number of ELL students served in the district. Bishop has 64 ELL students which is 28% of their students, the highest number in the district. The Early Childhood Program also serves a large number of ELL students. The majority of ELL students are Spanish speaking, however, five other languages are also spoken by some students. Ms. Vicki Anderson and Ms. Amy Harber, ELL teachers, presented information on methods used to teach ELL students and help them develop higher level thinking skills. ELL students receive two years of language instruction and most progress rapidly.
Final Adjustments to School Calendars
The Board approved final adjustments to school calendars which will provide time
for additional professional improvement for teachers. This year school improvement planning is focused on school-wide alignment of curriculum, instruction and assessment. The additional time for teacher work days will allow for completion of this work. The schools will immediately notify students and families of the changes in their school calendars.
State and Intra-District Accreditation
Following the guidelines outlined in the Englewood Schools' Intra-district Accreditation Indicators, the Board approved that all schools in Englewood's K-12 schools system, be designated as Accredited for the 2007-2008 school year. Colorado Department of Education (CDE) accredits districts, the districts accredits its schools. Bishop Elementary and Colorado's Finest Alternative High School will be provided additional resources to support their efforts toward increasing achievement. Ms. Vedra reviewed the CDE Accreditation Report for Englewood, including commendations for the strategic plan and using the plan to set goals, school improvement plans based on test data, and on going training for teachers to use data for improved student achievement. The successful closure of Flood and the reopened new Englewood Middle School were also noted as district successes including the implemented International Baccalaureate program.
Board Support for Student Trip to NLC, Washington D.C.
The Board approved providing $500 to support student attendance at the National League of Cities, Congressional City Conference in Washington D.C. The City sponsors participation for two Englewood students to this event. This money will help cover the cost of a chaperone.

b. In accordance with Section 24-6-402(2)(c) Colorado Revised Statutes, it is recommended the Roscoe L. Davidson Administration Building, 4101 S. Bannock St., is designated as the official posting place for all required legal notices when a quorum of the Board of Education attends a meeting.
