2006-2007 Budget
The Board of Education reviewed a second round of budget reduction proposals presented by administration. The first round of recommended reductions was discussed at the February 21, 2006, meeting. Most of the first round recommendations related to Englewood High School operations in order to provide early input to accommodate the registration process at EHS.

In discussing a second round of budget reductions, the Board reviewed district-wide proposed reductions estimated at $273,000 that included

  • eliminating the district newsletter editor and one/half of a clerical position at the administration building (absorbing these tasks)
  • eliminating duplicate coverage in disability insurance
  • recognizing a reduction in building instructional supply budgets due to enrollment decline (not decreasing the per pupil allocation)
  • reducing special education positions by two and one/half positions due to declining enrollment and determining where the special education students will be enrolled next year
  • recognizing projected savings from retirements.

Proposed budget reductions at the elementary and middle levels estimated at $422,800 include

  • eliminating two classroom teaching positions at the elementary level due to declining enrollment
  • eliminating six and one/half teaching positions at the middle level due to declining enrollment
  • eliminating the assistant principal position at Sinclair Middle School
  • replacing the assistant principal position at Flood Middle School with a dean of students.

The Board returned to the first round of recommended reductions and expressed a desire to not eliminate a counselor at EHS or the EHS health assistant. The Board also discussed the split of the band teacher between EHS and Flood. Concerns were raised regarding equity at the middle level and assuring that all students who want to participate in band would have the opportunity to do so. In summary, the first round recommended reductions are estimated at $165,000 at the district level and $203,600 at EHS (excludes a reduction in counselors and a reduction of health assistant).

International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) at Charles Hay
Ms. Mary Vedra, Executive Director of Learning Services, and Ms. Chris Laney-Barnes, Principal of Charles Hay Elementary, presented a proposal to introduce the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program at Charles Hay Elementary for the 2006-07 academic year. Support exists from the teachers and parents for this program. This will be an agenda item for the March 21 Board meeting.

6th Grades at Bishop and Charles Hay—2006-2007 Pilot Project
Ms. Linda McCaslin, Bishop Elementary School Principal, and Ms. Chris Laney-Barnes, Principal of Charles Hay Elementary, have surveyed parents of fifth grade students regarding their desire to allow sixth grade to remain at the elementary level next year at these two schools.  The surveys overwhelmingly support keeping 6th grade at the Bishop and Charles Hay elementary schools.  A pilot program is under review for the 2006-07 academic year. This will be an agenda item for the March 21 Board meeting.

Course Approval
Board members reviewed course approval forms for Honors English and an AVID Elective Course at EHS for approval at the March 21 Board meeting.
