Special Reports and Recognitions
Ms. Hunt mentioned that Shelley Thompson had to resign from the Board because she and her family relocated and no longer live in the Englewood School District. Ms. Hunt said the Board has 60 days to fill this vacant seat and encouraged people to consider taking on the role. Mr. Gorsky interjected that it is a good opportunity to try-out being on the Board since the commitment is only until the November 2009 election. An application for the vacant board position is on the Englewood Schools Web Site www.englewoodschools.org or can be picked up at the district office, 4101 South Bannock St.
Ms. Hunt, recognized Ms. Lorri Cahill, Health Assistant at Clayton Elementary, to receive a "Step Ahead Award" at the request of Mr. Jon Fore, Principal of Clayton Elementary. Mr. Fore stated that Ms. Cahill was born to be a school nurse; she is that good at it, always organized and pleasant, she goes above and beyond her role as Clayton's Health Assistant. Ms. Cahill is an advocate for families and children and is the driving force behind a comprehensive wellness plan at Clayton. The kids love Ms. Lorri. Some activities include staff fitness Wednesdays, fitness logs for students and staff, health fair for all students, safe kids program, along with other activities. Mr. Fore said that Ms. Cahill has provided leadership and a passion for educating the whole child. Ms. Hunt added her congratulations and said as a Clayton parent, she is very aware of how dedicated Ms. Cahill is to the children and appreciates her determination to increase wellness at Clayton.
Mr. McDaniel also added that his son talks about how nice and helpful Ms. Lorri is when he has occasion to visit the health office. There were many people from Clayton in attendance to add their good wishes; Ms. Cahill received a standing ovation. Ms. Cahill thanked Mr. Fore and everyone for their kindness and said she could not do all she does without the support of Helen Ricles and Cathy Zirklebach, Children's Hospital Nurses, who work in Englewood Schools providing training and support.
Board Reports
Ms. Miller attended the Parks and Recreation meeting where there was discussion on developing community sponsors to support projects in the district. Ms. Miller also reported that there would not be a community garden this year but this project should begin next spring. A water supply and construction needed for the garden should be complete in time to plant next spring. There will be a Farmer's Market at the City Center every Saturday beginning in May. Residents will be asked to provide input on the redevelopment of Duncan Park. The Broken Tee Golf Course now has an on-line reservation system for Englewood residents.
Ms. Miller also attended the Englewood Education Foundation (EEF) meeting and said that EEF has joined The Greater Englewood Chamber of Commerce and have a link on that web site. The Foundation is considering having some EHS students develop the EEF's web site. Highlights from the Superintendent's Report
* Mr. McDaniel informed the Board that Colorado Department of Education has hired Parson Engineering to assess every school building in the state to determine which districts will qualify for grant money to upgrade their buildings. Englewood was one of the first districts to be evaluated because Englewood is a small metro district and would allow the evaluating teams to form calibrate their assessment process before moving on to more remote locations. The grants will go to the most needy districts.
* Mr. McDaniel updated the Board on the staffing protocol. He has met with principals to determine staffing needs at all schools and all assignments will be made by May 15.
*The district did a comprehensive search to determine the Principal for Englewood High School. Five finalists were selected with Mr. Jon Fore being selected as the best person to lead EHS. Mr. McDaniel said he was very impressed with Mr. Fore's strengths, determination, and compassion and thinks Mr. Fore will be an excellent leader for EHS.
*Mr. McDaniel had Ms. Vedra present a PowerPoint on the 9th Grade Academy program that Ms. Michell Ansley and Ms. Vedra have developed. Mr. McDaniel stated that there are many developed 9th Grade Academy programs available but Ms. Ansley and Ms. Vedra have put together a program tailored to Englewood kids. Another very exciting development is that Englewood has been selected by CDE to participate in a pilot program that will provide premier software through Compass Learning for our students.
