Public Comments
There were no public comments.

School of the Month
Clayton Elementary School was the featured school this month. Ms. Nicole Westfall, Principal, introduced several of the student leaders at Clayton who talked about aspects of their school. Nahomy, Marriah, and Lisa talked about the caring community and how peers help each other. Fourth and fifth grade students help younger students solve problems and peer helpers give up their recess to instruct younger students in art. Ashlyn, Sarah, and Allie talked about instruction and learning and said the best thing is that the teachers make learning fun. Teachers also provide good and creative reading, writing, and math instruction to the students along with teaching the importance of safety. Jendara, Baylee and Jason mentioned unique programs that student use on the computers. Clayton has four mobile labs that everyone gets to use everyday. Technology at Clayton allows students various paths to learning. Health and wellness was addressed by Katelyn, Madison and Stephanny. Students participate in fun activities while learning to be healthy. Clayton kids know that play and sports are not only fun activities but also good for their bodies. Clayton kids, parents, and staff participated in the Diabetes Walk logging 1,773.8 miles and contributed the money to help find a cure for Diabetes. A video presentation depicting learning activities at Clayton was shown.

Special Recognitions
Ryan Glover, EHS Daniels Scholarship winner, was unable to attend this meeting and will try to come to the May 18th meeting.
The Board presented Mr. Sean McDaniel with a pen and thanked him for his two-years of service to Englewood Schools. Mr. Gorsky stated that it has been an absolute pleasure working with Mr. McDaniel. He thanked Mr. McDaniel for reminding everyone that no matter how we come in contact with kids, we each serve a part in their lives and education. Mr. Gorsky emphasized that the Board and people across the district are sad to see Mr. McDaniel go but wish him the best of luck in Oklahoma. Mr. McDaniel thanked the Board for the pen and for being such a great team. He said he has invested two years of his life here and will always carry this experience with him. He thinks Englewood is in a good place and positioned to begin making gains in student achievement based on the programs in place and dedication of the Englewood team.

Board Reports
Ms. Karly Gelinas reported that the EHS Prom was held on April 24th at the Brown Palace Hotel and was very successful and enjoyed by the kids. The junior class made $5,000 from prom activities. Students are preparing for the ACT test. Pride Day is May 8. Sports are ending and kids are busy studying for finals. Graduation is May 29 at 9:00 a.m.

Ms. Howard missed the DAAC meeting this past month but reported that Charles Hay World School was the featured school. She heard that Charles Hay has "fitness boot camp" one morning each week that all can attend. The teachers are using "thinking on your feet" exercises that get kids up and out of their chairs during class learning activities.


Ms. Miller attended the Parks and Recreation meeting and reported that the ribbon cutting for the community garden is May 15. Another community garden, at Bard Park, is being considered. The golf course now has all electric carts which are better for the environment. The Education Foundation is in the nomination process for officers. Creativity Grant applications are due this month. Eighteen applications for EEF Scholarships have been received. Ms. Miller enjoyed the dinner and interviews with the superintendent candidates and is very pleased with the outcome.

Mr. Gorsky thanked the board, district staff, and community members who participated in the selection process for the new superintendent. He congratulated and welcomed Mr. Brian Ewert.

Superintendent Report
Mr. McDaniel informed that the district is negotiating a lease for the Washington Street building with Childcare Partners.
The Chamber of Commerce Student Recognition Lunch was held recently and nine students were recognized for their leadership and integrity. This was a very special event for the students and their parents.
Mr. McDaniel stated that Mr. Ewert participated in the on-going negotiations with the Englewood Educators and demonstrated a strong grasp of school finance. Mr. McDaniel said he is certain Mr. Ewert will move the district forward.

Recommendation for Food Service Management
The Board approved Chartwells continuing as the food service provider for the district.

Board Scholarship Deadline Extended
The Board extended the Scholarship deadline to the morning of May 18, 2010.
