One person, a parent/EHS teacher, addressed the Board regarding security at the schools. He believes the District needs to revisit this issue.

Board Member Reports
Englewood Education Foundation—Mr. Gosky attended the Foundation's recent event at Hampden Hall for area small and industrial businesses. Although there was not as much participation as they would have liked, it was a good event and some key contacts were made.
Bullyproofing—Ms. Hunt attended a recent bullyproofing seminar, sponsored by Colorado Trust. Ms. Hunt was invited to this event by KidQuest Coordinator, Ms. Cathy Mandel. Ms. Hunt said this was a very worthwhile event and was glad she went.

Highlights from Superintendent's Report
Count Day—September 2 was Count Day, which drives the District's budget and enrollment projections. Final results will not be available until next week as there is still a count window open for enrolled students who were not in attendance on Count Day.
Special Meeting—A Special Meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 10, at 7:00 p.m. to readopt the budget. The budget must be readopted by October 15, according to State Law.
Security—After the incident at Platte Canyon High School, staff members performed site visits at all schools. Since the Columbine incident, except for selected main doors, all doors are supposed to be locked from the outside. This practice does seem to have become lax over time. Dr. McCabe did witness a lockdown drill at Sinclair, which was run very efficiently. The District is currently looking at a camera-based security system for the middle and high schools. They may also get bids on putting a camera at the front door of each elementary school.

Breaking Ranks II
Ms. Linda Torres, EHS Principal, gave an overview of Breaking Ranks II, a new reform strategy in place at EHS. Breaking Ranks II includes
  • 21 recommendations indicating specific goals for improving student outcomes
  • 3 Core Areas
    - Collaborative Leadership—Involve others in the change process through collaboration, review of data, and professional development
    - Personalization—Provide opportunities for students to build relationships with adults and peers, and between themselves and what they learn
    - Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment—Build relationships between students and ideas
  • 7 Cornerstone Strategies that help schools strategize about entry points for implementing recommendations

    Lights On Afterschool Proclamation   Handout
The Board approved the 2006 Proclamation for 'Lights On Afterschool' supporting afterschool programs and opportunities. KidQuest is sponsoring Lights On Afterschool activities at each of the elementary schools on Thursday, October 12.

    Updated Policy 4710-Evaluation of Certificated/Licensed Personnel—1st Reading Handout 1   Handout 2
The Board approved the 1st Reading of updated Policy 4710-Evaluation of Certificated/Licensed Personnel. Copies of the current policy and a rewritten policy were provided to the Board. The submitted rewrite more closely aligns with the new teacher evaluation tools recently put into place.

Updated Policy 5111-Age and Residency Requirements—1st Reading  Handout
The Board approved the 1st Reading of updated Policy 5111-Age and Residency Requirements. This policy was updated to allow students to finish their 12th grade year in Englewood if they move out-of-district the summer before 12th grade or anytime during their 12th grade year. The current policy contains wording restricting this scenario to students already in 12th grade.

    Resolutions to Oppose Amendments 38 & 39  Handout 1  Handout 2
The Board approved resolutions opposing Amendments 38 and 39. These amendments will appear on the ballot in the November election.
