HEALTH AND SAFETY
Immunizations
The
State of Colorado requires a certificate of immunization signed by a
physician for every child. A copy of that certificate must be on file
with the school district prior to the child starting in the program.
This must be updated annually.
Medication
Prescription
and non-prescription medications will be administered to children. The
following procedures must be followed:
1.
The State of Colorado requires a signed note from the physician for
ANY MEDICATION (both prescription and non-prescription). The statement
must include the date, name of drug, name of child, name of doctor,
dosage and times of administration.
2.
Parent must complete and sign the Parent Release for Administering Medication

Staff will store medication in a closed, locked container and will document
when it is administered.
Sunscreen
Each
family must provide sunscreen for their child. All bottles must be labeled
with the child's name. Staff will supervise application of sunscreen.
If your child burns easily, send an extra shirt for him/her to wear
while swimming. We strive to prevent sunburn and we request that you
send your child prepared to be outdoors. A permission to apply sunscreen
form must be signed by the parent.
Allergies
In
order for our staff to better serve your child, it is imperative that
parents inform staff of any allergies that their child may have or had,
for example, food, medication, or other substances.

a contagious disease, such as whooping cough, German or regular measles.
It is a licensing requirement that signs be posted to notify other families.
Natural
Disasters and Fire Guidelines
All
staff are trained in emergency procedures and have written plans of
action. Drills are practiced routinely with the children.
For
tornadoes and severe weather, all children will be brought inside the
school facility and taken to the safe area designated for that school
and attendance will be taken. For fire, all children will be evacuated
to the safe area designated at that school and attendance will be taken.
If away from the school on a field trip, procedures will be followed
at those facilities and the children will be returned to the school
when it is safe to do so.
ACCIDENTS AND
EMERGENCIES
KidQuest
staff are certified in CPR and First Aid. We will call you or your emergency
contact person to notify of a minor accident or injury. When there is
no question that your child must be taken to the doctor or the hospital,
we will call you to inform you of our course of action as soon as possible.
It is vital that you keep our staff updated in case of changes in your
phone at work or at home.
Lost Child
Every
effort is made to keep all children safe. In the event that a child
is missing, a search will be started immediately. If necessary, the
parents and the authorities will be called to assist in the search.
Parents, please assist us in educating your child of the importance
of staying with the KidQuest staff.
Reporting
of Child Abuse
Your
child's best interests, health and safety are our prime concern. KidQuest
programs are licensed programs. KidQuest is mandated to report any suspicion
of child abuse or neglect to Arapahoe County Department of Human Services
and/or local law enforcement agencies. A report demonstrates that there
is a cause for concern, and should not be taken as an accusation. We
are not allowed to consult with parents first and must report immediately.

or to the location of the scheduled activity. It is the parent's responsibility
to have the child at the site prior to the departure from the school.
If a child is brought to a field trip location, the parent must sign
the child in. Please notify the KidQuest staff in advance if you will
be bringing your child late.

ask that all children be dropped off by 8:30 a.m. If your child arrives

fruits or vegetables. No refrigeration will be provided. The cost for
any forgotten lunch or supplemental foods that KidQuest provides will

The atmosphere will be kept pleasant with conversation encouraged along
with eating. No child will be forced to eat, nor denial of food ever
used as a form of punishment. Please make sure that staff are aware
of any food allergies that your child may have.
Personal
Belongings
It
is the attempt of KidQuest to teach children to be responsible for their
belongings. We believe that a child learning to care for his/her belongings
is an important life skill that we want to foster. You can help by labeling
your child's belongings for easy identification.
What to
Bring
Please
provide your child with something that will hold his/her belongings
and can easily be carried. Please read the activity schedule to determine
when a child needs to bring extra items such as a swimsuit and towel.
During vacation or full day care, please send a labeled sack lunch with
the child and labeled water bottle.
What not
to Bring
Do
not allow your child to bring expensive clothes, gang clothing or items,
guns, knives, or any type of weapon or propellant toy; pocket radio,
game boys; pets of any kind; money unless specified on the activity
schedule. DO NOT LET YOUR CHILD BRING ANY ITEM HE/SHE CANNOT AFFORD
TO LOSE!
Lost and
Found
The
school will keep a lost and found. Please check often for any lost items.
KidQuest is not responsible for lost items.
Weather
KidQuest
wants children to have the opportunity to experience the changing seasons.
All children need to be prepared to go outside on a daily basis. This
gives children a chance to get fresh air, run, climb and roll in a natural
setting. We are aware of temperature and natural weather changes. Please
send appropriate clothing for your child, e.g. snow boots, gloves, mittens,
hats, jackets and sunscreen. During hot weather, water is available
at all times. Some activities are planned in the shade and indoors.
Movie
Policy
Movies
will be shown occasionally during the program. The movie will be offered
to children as an option and will be a G rating or a PG rating with
written parent approval. No PG 13 or R rated movies will be shown in
the KidQuest programs.
Discipline
KidQuest's
philosophy of a discipline program is that discipline is a continuous,
daily process of love and logic during which:
…
Children will be encouraged at all times
…
Responsible behavior will be recognized
…
Self-esteem will be built through positive interaction.
All
children will be treated equally and with fairness. The ultimate goal
of the discipline program is for the child to demonstrate self-control
and the ability to make proper decisions. We strive to achieve a safe
environment for all children and insist on respect for all people and
property. KidQuest staff set reasonable limits and consequences and
encourages self-discipline. Daily activities will be varied and offer
a number of choices to hold the child's interest. Children are expected
to respect the staff and treat other children as they would like to
be treated and work cooperatively with one another.
Disciplinary
action may include one or more of the following guidelines:
…
Talk to the children involved and discuss appropriate behavior.
…
Communication with the parent regarding concerns.
…
Behavior modification plan.
…
Suspension from the program.
…
Dismissal from the program.
In
some cases, depending upon the severity, it becomes necessary to dismiss
a child from the KidQuest program. If this occurs, parents will be asked
to find alternative care immediately.
COMMUNICATION
Staff
Qualifications
The
quality and effectiveness of childcare services are directly related
to the skills and personal characteristics of staff. Recruiting, selecting,
training and supporting staff are essential, interrelated processes
in insuring the success and integrity of the programs.
Staff
are required to have experience in working with children. They are selected
for personal qualities of warmth, empathy, and ability to relate positively
to children. The staff development program includes training in safety,
health and nutrition, program environment, physical, cognitive, and
creative activities, communication, social skills and positive guidance,
and working with families.
All
staff are required to have first aid and CPR certifications. Background
checks are conducted on all staff including criminal record background
checks, Central Registry checks and reference checks.
Ratio
The
KidQuest follows the Colorado Department of Human Services guidelines.
Licensing requires a 1:15 ratio for school age care. KidQuest strives
to operate programs at a ratio lower than that required.
Prevention
of Child Abuse
KidQuest
is committed to a vigilant effort to safeguard and enhance the lives
of young persons in our care. Every reasonable effort is made to reduce
risks to children. Staff are trained, supervised, and evaluated on prevention
of child abuse.
Communication
with Staff
Each
KidQuest site has a Director in charge of that program. Cell phone numbers
for each site will be published on every activity schedule. If you are
unable to reach your Director or have other concerns, please call Cathy
Mandel, KidQuest Program Coordinator at 303-806-2037.
Special
requests, doctor's appointments, etc. should be in writing and given
to the staff at the site.
FAMILY INVOLVEMENT
Family
support is critical to the success of the program. Englewood Schools
recognizes and values parents in the program. Parental involvement is
the number one indicator for a child's success in school and, therefore,
daily communication with staff is extremely important. Open communication
among staff, parents and children is a key component of a quality childcare
program.
Family
Activities
Special
Events will be scheduled throughout the school year and we hope that
all families are able to attend. It is a great opportunity to communicate
with the KidQuest staff.
Volunteers
and Donations
Parents
are encouraged to share a hobby or area of expertise with the children
in the program. On special trips, it is helpful to bring additional
adults and parents are encouraged to volunteer. Donations for dramatic
play and arts and crafts supplies are always welcome.
Evaluation
Surveys
will be given to parents and children twice a year so that they have
the opportunity to evaluate the program. In addition, all parents are
welcome to join the Child Care Advisory Committee to assist in enhancing
the quality of the program.
VISITORS
Parents
or guardians are always welcome and encouraged to visit the program.
Visits do not need to be announced or arranged in advance. However,
the observing parent or guardian must be listed on the child's authorization
card in order to have access to the program area. Any visitor entering
the childcare program will be required to sign in, write their address,
state the purpose of the visit and show identification.
